Packing Smart for your House Move
Packing is often one of the most intimidating aspects of moving to a new home. It can be very overwhelming, and most people end up packing inefficiently or slowly because they simply do not know where to start. With some planning and focus, you can organize your packing and simplify the unpacking you will have to do upon moving in.
Get rid of what you don’t need. Moving is a great chance to simplify and de-clutter your life, but many people do not take advantage of this opportunity and simply bring all of their clutter with them to their new home. Take a look at your belongings and get rid of anything you don’t want or need. Take these items to a thrift store, or hold a yard sale to help offset your moving expenses!
Get started early! There’s a tendency to underestimate how long it will take to pack everything, and most people let it wait until the last minute. This results in a stressful rush to finish everything in time, leading to poorly packed boxes. If your belongings are not packed properly, they may become damaged during the move, or it could be difficult to find what you need after you move in. Avoid this trouble by giving yourself plenty of time to get organized and pack.
Pack one room at a time. Do not try to pack everything in the house at once. Focus on one room at a time. Label each box with the room it belongs to and its contents, and keep an inventory of the boxes. This will help you know where each box goes as soon as you move in, and will make it easier to find an item you may be looking for.
Prioritize your packing. Begin by packing your most unessential possessions. Save the items you use everyday for last, and put together an “Open First” box for each room, with the things you will need as soon as you move in. Also, put together a suitcase for each family member with clothes and toiletries for three days.
